Supporting Trump's actions in LA, Speaker Johnson claims that Newsom ought to be "tarred and feathered."

As protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement continue, Speaker Mike Johnson once again sided with President Donald Trump, saying that the president is "absolutely right" to send the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles. Johnson also backed the president's criticism of California Governor Gavin Newsom, saying that the governor should be "tarred and feathered."

Johnson claimed that Trump is "fully in his authority right now to do what he is doing" to "maintain order" during the protests, which includes sending 700 Marines and 4,000 National Guard members to Los Angeles as protesters clash with police.

During a press conference, Johnson stated, "We are standing with President Trump because he put his hand on the table and said, 'Not on my watch,' and we applaud that."

Although Johnson would not comment on Trump's suggestion on Monday that Newsom should be arrested, he did say that Newsom should be "tarred and feathered."

"Look, I am not in that lane. The speaker stated, "Gavin Newsom should be tarred and feathered, but I will not give you a legal analysis on whether he should be arrested."

"Good to know we are skipping the arrest and going straight for the 1700s style forms of punishment," Newsom retorted in a post on X. Given that the @GOP wants to return our nation to the 18th century, this threat is appropriate.

In response to Trump's remark about his arrest on Monday, the governor of California described it as "an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism."

Johnson charged that Newsom was more concerned with changing his image than with safeguarding the state and its people.

"Dude, do your job. "I tell Gavin Newsom to do his job," Johnson continued. "Be a governor and stop working on your rebranding. Protect the rule of law. And that is not what he is doing."
