‘How to Train Your Dragon’ leaps in box office opening with $83.7 million, smashing ‘Lilo & Stitch’
This weekend's success at the box office for "How to Train Your Dragon" demonstrated that some remakes are still relevant.
Comscore estimates show that the Universal live-action version of the popular animated series opened with a solid $83.7 million in North American theaters on Sunday. The picture, which was directed by franchise veteran Dean DeBlois, centers on the improbable bond between Toothless, a dragon, and Hiccup, a young Viking played by Mason Thames.
"How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World," which debuted with $55 million in 2019, was soon surpassed by the revival. The most recent movie made over $114.1 million abroad, increasing the total to $197.8 million worldwide.
Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore's senior media analyst, stated, "This is just another instance of a live-action remake truly fulfilling the marketing promise." "I believe that some of these films' longevity and playability, especially during the summer, have been nothing short of amazing."
With a $12 million opening, "Materialists," a contemporary New York love story starring Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal, and Dakota Johnson, completed the week's top three movies. In the romantic dramedy, Johnson plays a cunning matchmaker who must choose between two suitors: a wealthy "unicorn" who looks too good to be true and a broke, struggling actor who also happens to be her ex.
With $10.3 million in revenue, "Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning" dropped to fourth place and avoided going into single digit territory.
Despite receiving favorable reviews from reviewers and viewers alike, the John Wick spinoff "Ballerina" only managed to secure fifth place with $9.4 million. The action movie, which was directed by Len Wiseman, starring Ana de Armas and has Keanu Reeves return in a supporting role.
Additionally, "How to Train" took the top spot, surpassing Disney's "Lilo & Stitch," which dropped to second after three weekends at the top of the charts. Its domestic total exceeded $386.3 million after that hybrid live-action remake contributed an additional $15 million.
