📅 USA NEWS TODAY
U.S. stock markets will be closed on Thursday, June 19, 2025, in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day.
Both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq will pause trading for the holiday and will reopen on Friday, June 20. The U.S. bond market will also be closed on June 19, as noted by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA).
What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth, often called America’s “Second Independence Day,” became a federal holiday in 2021. It marks the historic moment on June 19, 1865, when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger and 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, and announced that more than 250,000 enslaved Black Americans were free — over two years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.
Today, Juneteenth serves as a day of reflection, education, and celebration across the United States, honoring the resilience, culture, and freedom of Black Americans.
What Happens Next for Markets?
After the Juneteenth break, trading will resume as normal on Friday, June 20. The next scheduled market closure will be for Independence Day on Friday, July 4.
