Hassett Confident Courts Will Uphold Trump’s Tariffs Amid Legal Battle

Washington, D.C. — Despite recent legal challenges, the White House remains optimistic that its tariff policies will prevail in court. White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said Sunday that the administration is standing firmly behind its strategy and expects judicial support going forward.

“We’re very thrilled. We are very confident that the judges would uphold this law,” Hassett said in an interview on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos. “I think that’s Plan A — and we’re very, very confident that Plan A is all we’re ever going to need.”

His comments come after a rollercoaster week for the Trump administration’s tariff agenda. On Wednesday, a court order temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s tariffs, raising concerns about the legal authority underpinning them. However, shortly after, an appeals court reinstated the tariffs, at least for now, allowing the administration to proceed while the legal battle continues.

At the heart of the dispute is the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), a law the administration invoked to justify its tariffs. A lower court ruled that using the IEEPA in this context doesn’t give the president the authority to impose “unlimited” tariffs — a move critics say stretches executive power beyond its legal limits.

The White House, however, has pushed back, warning that any interruption in the tariff policy could disrupt delicate trade negotiations and weaken the U.S. position on the global stage.

While the legal wrangling is far from over, the administration’s message is clear: it’s not backing down.

Stay tuned for updates as the courts continue to weigh in on one of the most high-profile economic disputes of the Trump era
