As the number of injured victims climbed to 12, Boulder District Attorney Michael Dougherty announced Monday that a man who allegedly threw Molotov cocktails at pro-Israel protesters on Sunday has been charged with a federal hate crime.

The main picture: According to local authorities, an attack in Boulder, Colorado, which is being investigated as terrorism, left no victims dead as of Monday afternoon. However, several others were left with burns, and at least two are still in the hospital.

A federal hate crime conviction carries a maximum 10-year sentence. Acting U.S. Attorney J. Bishop Grewell for the District of Colorado stated at a briefing on Monday afternoon that the statutory maximum increases to life in prison when the offense involves attempted murder, as it does in this instance.

According to Dougherty, the man is charged with multiple offenses, including sixteen counts of first-degree attempted murder. The highest penalty for a conviction would be 384 years in state prison.

A $10 million cash-only bond has been set by a court.

Making headlines: According to an FBI agent's affidavit, the defendant, 45-year-old Mohamed Sabry Soliman, shouted "Free Palestine!" while he tossed the Molotov cocktails.

Soliman allegedly informed police during an interview following his detention that he had been preparing the attack for a year and was waiting till his daughter graduated before committing the murder of all Zionists.

According to Grewell, Soliman allegedly informed police that he attempted to purchase a firearm to carry out the attack but was unable to do so since he was not a legitimate citizen.

According to Grewell and the affidavit, the suspect reportedly allegedly said he had "no regrets" and would carry out another attack if given the chance.

Attorney General Pam Bondi was quoted as saying, "We will never accept this kind of bigotry," in a statement announcing the accusation of hate crimes. "We cannot tolerate a society where Jewish Americans are singled out for persecution because of their identity and beliefs."

A hate crime "including actual or perceived race, religion, or national origin" was the charge brought against Soliman.

Situation: President Trump declared in a statement on Monday that the incident "will not be tolerated."

He posted on Truth Social, "My heart goes out to the victims of this awful event, and the Great People of Boulder, Colorado!"

Additionally, he held former President Biden accountable for Soliman's visit.

"Biden's absurd Open Border Policy, which has severely harmed our nation, is what brought him in. Trump wrote, "He has to leave under the 'TRUMP' Policy."

"The entire force of the law will be applied to the prosecution of terrorist acts. This is just one more illustration of the need to secure our borders and exclude anti-American, illegal radicals from our country.

Context: According to Department of Homeland Security spokesman Tricia McLaughlin, Soliman arrived in the United States in August 2022 with a B2 visa that ended in February 2023.

In September 2022, he submitted an asylum application.

Uber confirmed in a statement to Axios that Soliman was a contractor for the company. Following the attack, Uber claimed to have blocked Soliman's driver's account and to have been in contact with police officials.

According to the firm, he "had no troubling input" as a driver on the platform and complied with Uber's legal standards in Colorado.

On Monday, law enforcement officials stated that they had no prior interaction with Soliman and that he was not on their radar prior to Sunday's attack.

Zoom in: The walk in favor of the hostages was scheduled as "a peaceful walk to show sympathy with the hostages and their families, and a plea for their release" by Run for Their Lives.

A "makeshift flamethrower" was thrown into the crowd by the suspect.
