"‘Carers Need Support Too’: Bruce Willis’s Wife Speaks Out Following the Deaths of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa"
"Emma Heming Willis, primary caregiver to Bruce Willis since his 2023 dementia diagnosis, highlights ‘a broader story’ about the challenges faced by carers."
Emma Heming Willis, the primary caregiver for her husband, actor Bruce Willis, who is battling a rare form of dementia, has spoken out following the recent deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa.
A New Mexico authorities' investigation determined last week that Arakawa, 65, died from a rare respiratory disease approximately seven days before her husband. As a result, Hackman—who suffered from Alzheimer’s—may have spent a week alone, disoriented, and increasingly malnourished.
Investigators suspect that due to his condition, Hackman may not have realized his wife had passed and was unable to call for help. The 95-year-old actor was eventually discovered near the entrance of their Santa Fe home, apparently after suffering a fall.
Speaking on Instagram, Heming Willis, 46, expressed hope that the tragic circumstances surrounding the couple’s deaths, as well as the loss of one of their dogs, would encourage deeper reflection on the "broader story" of caregiving challenges.
"I truly believe there is something to learn from this," Heming Willis said. "Caregivers need care too. They are essential, and it’s so important that we support them so they can continue to show up for their loved ones."
She added, "There’s a common misconception that caregivers have it all figured out—that they’ve got it covered. I don’t subscribe to that."
His wife, along with his daughters and ex-wife Demi Moore, has been widely praised for openly discussing his condition and providing unwavering support for the former action star.
Heming Willis’s memoir on caregiving, The Unexpected Journey, is set for release in September. Speaking about the book, she emphasized the importance of accessible resources and information.
"Having resources and information readily available is imperative," she said. "From my experience and from speaking with other caregivers, I know our stories are, unfortunately, all too similar."
Many have questioned why Hackman and his wife did not seem to have a stronger support network in place.
The circumstances surrounding Hackman’s death have had a significant impact on the legacy of one of Hollywood’s most revered stars. His and Arakawa’s tragic situation has brought renewed attention to the challenges faced by vulnerable elderly individuals and their caregivers.
