π Texas Floods Claim Over 100 Lives — 27 Campers Among the Victims as Search Intensifies
Kerr County, Texas – July 8, 2025
What began as heavy summer rain has spiraled into one of the deadliest natural disasters in Texas history. Catastrophic flooding has now claimed the lives of at least 104 people, with 27 of the victims confirmed to be children and staff from Camp Mystic, a beloved summer camp nestled along the Guadalupe River.
π A Night of Horror in the Hill Country
Officials say the flooding escalated rapidly after more than 14 inches of rain fell within 24 hours across parts of Central Texas, swelling rivers beyond their banks and catching many off guard — even those familiar with the region's flood history.
Camp Mystic, known for its legacy of tradition and friendship among young girls from across Texas, became the site of unimaginable loss when floodwaters overwhelmed the area in the early hours of Sunday morning. Survivors reported waters rising “within minutes,” leaving little time for evacuation.
π¨ Search and Rescue Underway
Emergency crews from local and federal agencies continue to comb through wreckage and submerged areas in search of the missing. Drones, search dogs, and dive teams have been deployed in the ongoing effort.
“We are still holding out hope,” said Kerr County Sheriff David Russell, holding back emotion. “We will not stop searching until every child and adult is accounted for.”
π️ A Community in Mourning
Vigils are being held across the state, with Camp Mystic alumni and grieving families gathering to remember the lives lost. The tragedy has united Texans in sorrow, as well as in action — volunteers are delivering supplies, providing shelter, and offering support to those devastated by the storm.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared a state of emergency and requested federal disaster relief. "The scale of this loss is beyond comprehension. Texas stands united in this heartbreak," he said during a press conference.
π§The Bigger Picture
Climate experts warn that extreme weather events like this are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change. With Texas already reeling from wildfires and heatwaves earlier this year, the floods are yet another sobering reminder of the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades and emergency preparedness.
