๐Ÿ”ฅ Fireworks Likely Spark Brush Fire Threatening Laguna Beach Homes

Laguna Beach, Calif. – July 7, 2025
A fast-moving brush fire erupted Monday afternoon in the hills of Laguna Beach, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of homes. Officials suspect illegal fireworks may be to blame.

๐Ÿ“ Where It Started

The blaze, dubbed the Rancho Fire, ignited around 2:15 p.m. near Rancho Laguna Road and Morningside Drive, according to the Laguna Beach Fire Department.

As of Monday evening, about three acres had burned, and evacuation orders were issued for residents on La Mirada Street, Katella Street, Summit Drive, and Baja Street. A temporary shelter was set up at the Community and Susi Q Center (380 3rd St.).

๐Ÿš Rapid Response

Fire crews moved swiftly to contain the flames. Four helicopters, one firefighting aircraft, and multiple ground crews were deployed.

Laguna Beach City Manager Dave Kiff said by 4:30 p.m., officials felt they had “a good handle on it.” Thankfully, no homes had been lost at that point, but officials urged residents to follow evacuation orders.

๐Ÿงจ Cause Under Investigation

Laguna Beach Mayor Alex Rounaghi said fireworks are the likely cause, but the investigation is ongoing. “No one is in custody,” he confirmed.

๐Ÿš— Road Closures & Traffic

The blaze brought traffic to a standstill. South Coast Highway was closed between Broadway Street and Crown Valley Parkway, with southbound traffic rerouted to Laguna Canyon Road.

๐Ÿ› ️ Fire Mitigation Made a Difference

Officials credited recent wildfire mitigation efforts for helping contain the fire. The city had previously cleared dry vegetation in the area and installed a helopad water tank linked to a high-pressure refill line, allowing aircraft to make quicker water drops.

Rounaghi said over $25 million has been invested in wildfire safety since the city’s 2019 fire mitigation plan was enacted. That plan has been updated following the Palisades and Eaton fires, and more safety upgrades are underway.

“It’s not a question of if but when the next wildfire happens,” Rounaghi said. “Today is proof of that. That’s why we go above and beyond in preparedness.”
