Epstein Files Fallout: GOP Fractures as Johnson Halts House Votes; Committee Subpoenas Ghislaine Maxwell – LIVE

The political tremors from the newly unsealed Epstein files are shaking Washington to its core. With the release of previously classified documents, names, allegations, and longstanding suspicions have reignited a firestorm across Capitol Hill—prompting swift action, sharp division, and a rare procedural freeze in the House.

On Monday, House Speaker Mike Johnson shocked colleagues by suspending all scheduled votes, citing "emerging national concerns" in light of the Epstein revelations. Johnson’s decision, which many in the GOP consider a defensive maneuver, has intensified internal party rifts, especially as Democrats press forward for full transparency and further investigation.

In a dramatic turn, the House Oversight Committee has issued a subpoena to Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime associate, currently serving a 20-year sentence. Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) confirmed Maxwell is being called to testify on her knowledge of Epstein’s network, elite connections, and potential political cover-ups.

“No one is above the law—past or present,” Comer said in a press briefing. “This is about justice, not partisanship.”

But not everyone in the GOP is on board. A split is emerging between hardliners demanding swift accountability and establishment figures urging caution.

Republican Civil War?

Some Republicans, particularly in the Freedom Caucus, have praised the subpoena, calling it a necessary step toward government transparency. Others, however, see the move as politically risky, especially with powerful names—some allegedly connected to both parties—surfacing in the documents.

“There’s a reason why these files were kept secret for so long,” said Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX). “Dragging everyone into a public spectacle won’t serve victims—it’ll serve media ratings and conspiracy theorists.”

Meanwhile, Democrats are seizing the moment, accusing Republicans of selective outrage and covering for allies implicated in the case. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) tweeted, “It’s time we stop playing defense for billionaires and predators. Subpoena everyone. Release everything.”

What’s Next?

Legal analysts say Maxwell’s testimony could be explosive—especially if she names names under oath. However, it’s unclear whether she’ll cooperate, especially if doing so puts her at risk or violates any undisclosed plea arrangements.

Adding fuel to the fire, several prominent figures in business, media, and politics—some allegedly with ties to Epstein’s private island or jet logs—have already begun issuing statements denying any wrongdoing.

The fallout is far from over. Johnson’s vote cancellations may buy time, but pressure is mounting from both the public and within his own party. As the House returns to session later this week, expect more subpoenas, more political chess moves, and potentially, more fractures within the GOP.

Stay tuned for live updates as the Epstein files continue to send shockwaves through Washington.
