Chaos in East Hollywood: 30 Injured After Driver Plows Into Crowd, Shot by Bystanders

East Hollywood, CA – July 18, 2025 — A peaceful summer evening turned into a nightmare on Thursday when a car barreled through a crowded intersection in East Hollywood, injuring at least 30 people and leaving a community shaken.

Authorities say the incident occurred around 7:40 PM at the busy corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Vermont Avenue, an area known for its vibrant nightlife and foot traffic. Witnesses describe a horrifying scene as a speeding sedan jumped the curb and plowed into pedestrians, some of whom were standing in line for a food truck.

Panic erupted immediately. Videos circulating on social media show people screaming, running for safety, and rushing to help the injured. Bystanders reportedly pulled the driver from the car shortly after the vehicle came to a stop—and, in a dramatic and controversial turn, shot him at point-blank range.

The driver, whose identity has not yet been officially released, was transported to a nearby hospital and is in critical condition. Law enforcement sources confirmed that the shooting is under investigation as a possible act of vigilantism, and at least two individuals are being questioned in connection with it.

Of the 30 injured, at least five are in serious condition, including a child and an elderly woman. Emergency responders say the swift action of nearby civilians and medical crews likely saved lives.

“We don’t yet know whether this was intentional or the result of a medical or mechanical failure,” said LAPD spokesperson Lt. Raymond Ortiz. “What we do know is that a tragedy unfolded, and we’re doing everything we can to determine what led to it.”

The FBI and LAPD are jointly investigating the incident, and officials have not ruled out terrorism, though they cautioned against speculation.

This incident has reignited debates across America about public safety, mental health, and community justice. Many locals are calling the shooting of the driver an example of "street justice" in a time of chaos, while others urge restraint and due process.

Mayor Karen Bass issued a statement Friday morning:

“Our hearts are with the victims and their families. While we await the results of the investigation, I urge everyone to stay calm, stay informed, and support one another.”

Meanwhile, the city of Los Angeles is once again facing tough questions: Are our streets safe? Are first responders equipped for this kind of unpredictability? And in moments of fear, how far should citizens go to protect themselves—or retaliate?

As East Hollywood begins to pick up the pieces, one thing is clear: this wasn’t just a car crash—it was a community’s worst fear come to life.
