Trump's Israel-Iran Ceasefire Nearly Collapses Hours After Announcement

Just hours after being hailed as a potential diplomatic breakthrough, the ceasefire brokered by former President Donald Trump between Israel and Iran teetered on the brink of collapse early Tuesday morning, as fresh violence erupted across key flashpoints.

The agreement, which came into effect at midnight local time, was meant to bring a halt to the most dangerous escalation between the two rivals in over a decade. Trump, who announced the ceasefire Monday evening during a press event at Mar-a-Lago, declared it a “historic moment of peace” and credited his personal diplomacy with leaders in both Jerusalem and Tehran.

However, optimism was short-lived.

Missile Strike Hits Southern Israel

At approximately 3:45 a.m. local time, just under four hours after the ceasefire began, a residential building in Beersheba was struck by what Israeli officials claimed was a short-range missile launched from southern Lebanon. The strike caused significant damage and injured at least seven civilians, including two children.

Israel’s military responded with limited airstrikes in southern Lebanon, targeting what it said were Hezbollah-operated launch sites. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated it was acting in “self-defense” and insisted the response was calibrated not to break the ceasefire, but to neutralize “immediate threats.”

Iran Denies Involvement

Iran’s Foreign Ministry issued a swift denial of any involvement, calling the attack a “false flag provocation” meant to sabotage the peace effort. A spokesperson accused Israeli hardliners of undermining the ceasefire before it could take hold.

Iran also condemned what it called “aggressive Israeli airstrikes” in Lebanon, warning that if the ceasefire collapses entirely, Tehran “will not sit idly by.”

Trump’s Response

Trump, who had personally negotiated the deal through backchannels in Oman and the UAE, took to Truth Social just before dawn to express his frustration.

“The Deep State and warmongers in Israel are trying to kill the greatest peace deal in decades. I stopped World War 3. Let’s hope cooler heads prevail. #TrumpPeace”

He later told Fox News that he is in “constant contact” with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and that he “believes peace is still possible.”

Biden Administration Watching Closely

While the Biden administration was not involved in the negotiation of the ceasefire, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a brief statement Tuesday morning urging “both sides to maintain restraint and preserve the fragile truce.”

Behind the scenes, U.S. officials reportedly fear that the deal, announced without Washington’s direct participation, may unravel completely and reignite full-scale conflict in the region.

Fragile Ground Ahead

Analysts are warning that the situation could spiral quickly. “This is a ceasefire in name only if both sides continue to respond tit-for-tat,” said Lina Khatib, a Middle East policy expert based in London. “Without a credible enforcement mechanism and multilateral backing, the ceasefire is hanging by a thread.”

Meanwhile, civilians in both Israel and Iran remain on edge. Air raid sirens sounded across northern Israel throughout the morning, and social media in Tehran showed citizens stocking up on essentials amid fears of renewed airstrikes.

Conclusion

As of this writing, the ceasefire technically remains in place, but its durability is highly uncertain. The hours ahead will be critical as Trump’s last-minute peace effort faces its first — and potentially fatal — test.
