Trump’s Iran Airstrikes a Risky Gamble with “No Endgame,” Warns Senator Mark Kelly
Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) has raised sharp concerns over President Trump’s recent airstrikes on Iran, calling the military operation a dangerous gamble that lacks a clear strategic conclusion.
The strikes, carried out over the weekend, targeted three Iranian nuclear sites. According to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the strikes were aimed at crippling Iran’s nuclear weapons ambitions, which he claimed had been “obliterated.” However, satellite analysts and nuclear experts remain skeptical, noting Iran may have relocated much of its enriched uranium before the attacks.
Speaking on NPR’s Morning Edition, Senator Kelly — a former Navy pilot and current member of the Senate Intelligence and Armed Services Committees — warned that the U.S. may now be in a significantly more dangerous position.
“The Iranians at any moment now could attack Americans. That wasn’t a risk we had before this strike was conducted,” Kelly said. “And my biggest worry here is — even though we tried to set them back in developing a nuclear weapon — this could be the moment they decide to actually start building a bomb.”
Photos from Tehran showed protesters flooding Revolution Square, some chanting anti-American slogans and holding posters depicting President Trump as a vampire — underscoring the immediate backlash from within Iran.
Adding to concerns, Kelly criticized the president for failing to consult or inform key Democratic leaders in Congress prior to the operation, a move he believes undermines democratic accountability in decisions of war and peace.
The Pentagon has defended the strikes as necessary and preemptive, emphasizing close coordination with Israeli forces, who have been engaged in escalating military actions against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
Still, the question remains: what happens next?
For now, U.S. officials and lawmakers alike are left bracing for potential retaliation, uncertain of how this sudden escalation will reshape an already volatile Middle East.
