Trump Threatens Legal Action Against Journalists Over Leaked Iran Strike Report
Former U.S. President Donald Trump is once again making headlines—this time for threatening journalists with legal action over leaked details from an intelligence report about recent American military strikes on Iran.
In a televised interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo, Trump declared that his administration might compel reporters to disclose the sources behind the leaked assessment. He also hinted at prosecuting both the journalists and their informants if they fail to comply.
What the Leaked Report Says
The classified report, shared among lawmakers and U.S. intelligence officials, contradicts Trump’s public claims about the effectiveness of the June 21 airstrikes. According to the assessment, the strikes caused only temporary disruption to Iran’s nuclear program. Contrary to Trump’s assertion that the attacks “obliterated” three nuclear sites, U.S. intelligence concluded that Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles had largely been relocated before the strikes.
Multiple media outlets, including CNN and The New York Times, reported that the strikes only delayed Iran’s nuclear ambitions by a few months. Trump responded by branding these stories “unpatriotic” and accused Democrats of leaking sensitive information.
Trump Targets Reporters and Media
In his Fox interview, Trump doubled down:
“You go up and tell the reporter, ‘National security – who gave it?’… I suspect we’ll be doing things like that.”
He further stated that if the government wanted to find out who leaked the information, “they could find out easily.”
Trump has specifically criticized CNN and The New York Times, and even suggested filing lawsuits against them. A lawyer representing Trump sent a letter to the Times demanding a retraction and apology, calling the article “false,” “defamatory,” and “unpatriotic.”
Iran Responds
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei dismissed Trump’s claims, accusing the former president of exaggerating the military success to hide the truth. On social media, a post from Khamenei's official account said the strikes “could not do anything.”
What’s at Stake for Journalism?
The U.S. Constitution traditionally protects journalists from revealing their sources—a right known as reporter’s privilege. However, Trump’s push for legal action could test the boundaries of press freedom, especially when national security is invoked.
This escalation reflects the rising tension between Trump and the free press, as well as growing concerns about how governments manage transparency in wartime reporting.
