In "targeted political violence," Minnesota politician Melissa Hortman was assassinated and State Senator John Hoffman was injured.
According to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a state senator and his wife were shot and injured in a "act of deliberate political violence" at their residences early Saturday, while a state representative and her husband were shot and murdered.
According to authorities, a manhunt is currently in progress to find the shooter who was posing as a police officer.
In what Walz described as a "politically-motivated assassination," Democrat state representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed.
According to the governor, Hortman "was a formidable public servant," having previously served as Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives. "She cannot be replaced."
The governor claimed that both Democrat state senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot several times and had surgery.
Walz stated, "We have a cautious optimism that they will survive this murder attempt."
Brooklyn Park, just north of Minneapolis, and Champlin, a few miles apart, are the two shooting sites.
According to Drew Evans, superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Hoffman and his wife were shot near Champlin at around two in the morning.
Officers were on their way to proactively check on Hortman after Hoffman was shot when they met the suspect at Hortman's residence at approximately 3:35 a.m., according to Evans.
According to the police, they discovered a person at the door of Hortman's home dressed like a police officer, complete with a badge and vest, a Taser, and other tools.
Authorities say the man was able to escape and leave on foot after exchanging shots with the officers.
Authorities claimed that the suspect's car, which had police lights and otherwise resembled a police car, was in Hortman's driveway.
According to officials, a list of additional potential targets was taken from the suspect's car. Police stated that Hortman and Hoffman were listed on the list.
According to law enforcement sources familiar with the situation, the list contained dozens of other Minnesota Democrats, including state attorney general Keith Ellison, U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, U.S. Sen. Tina Smith, and Governor Walz.
According to the sources, police are investigating whether the suspect's motivations were influenced by radical abortion beliefs.
According to authorities, security personnel have been sent to safeguard anyone on the list. It is "working with our federal, state and local allies," according to the Capitol Police.
"Such awful violence will not be accepted," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt wrote on social media after briefing President Donald Trump on the shooting.
Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that she is keeping a careful eye on the matter.
She issued a statement saying, "This horrifying brutality will not be accepted and will be prosecuted to the utmost extent of the law."
The violence was also denounced by House Speaker Mike Johnson, who stated that "every leader must absolutely condemn it."
Hoffman and Hortman are buddies, according to Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin, a former chair of the Democratic party in Minnesota.
"From introducing free lunches for our children to defending women's rights and reproductive care to advocating for Minnesota families, Speaker Hortman was a leader in every sense of the word," Martin said in a statement. "I have known Melissa since the beginning of her political career, and she was also a personal friend. I am indebted to her since I personally relied on her for companionship, guidance, and advice. She is the best Speaker of the House Minnesota has ever had, as I have stated numerous times when I introduced her at events.
"We must put an end to this needless violence. The political violence and fanaticism that have been nurtured in our nation are reflected in these horrific killings," Martin stated. Today, we pledge once more to stand out for the principles that Melissa and Mark exemplified—creating a world that is more compassionate, equitable, and loving. This murderer is mistaken if he believes that we will be silenced.
"We loved them passionately," Melissa Hortman's sister-in-law said to ABC News, adding, "I hope they get him and they get justice for what occurred." It is terrible.
Police are warning the public to exercise caution while the manhunt is still going on. According to officials, Brooklyn Park is under a shelter in place order.
Police advised calling 911 to make sure the cop is who they say they are if they knock on your door.
The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office stated, "Police are asking that no one open their door to a lone police officer." "Officers with licenses are working together."
Until the suspect is apprehended, Walz advised Minnesotans to avoid going to any political events in the state "out of an excess of caution."
Authorities say they spotted flyers that stated, "No kings," in the suspect's vehicle. To protest Trump's presidency and to counterprogram the military parade in Washington, D.C., thousands of "No Kings Day" rallies are scheduled to take place around the United States on Saturday.
