Celtics Trade Kristaps Porzingis to Hawks in Major Three-Team Deal

June 25, 2025 | By USA NEWS TODAY|

In a bold move signaling a new chapter for the Boston Celtics, the team has traded center Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks as part of a three-team deal also involving the Brooklyn Nets, sources confirmed to ESPN's Shams Charania on Tuesday night.

Deal Breakdown:

  • Atlanta Hawks receive:

    • Kristaps Porzingis
    • A second-round pick
  • Brooklyn Nets receive:

    • The No. 22 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft
    • Guard Terance Mann
  • Boston Celtics receive:

    • Forward Georges Niang
    • A second-round pick

This marks the Celtics’ second major trade in under 24 hours. Just Monday evening, Boston sent Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Anfernee Simons and two second-round picks. The back-to-back deals reportedly save the Celtics approximately $180 million in luxury taxes, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, bringing their payroll below the second tax apron and potentially out of the tax entirely.

These cost-cutting measures come in the wake of Jayson Tatum’s Achilles injury, which he suffered during the Celtics’ second-round playoff loss to the New York Knicks. The team’s new ownership group is expected to finalize its purchase soon, adding more urgency to streamline financial commitments ahead of the transition.

Porzingis' New Start in Atlanta

Porzingis heads to Atlanta after two productive seasons in Boston. Last season, he shot a career-high 41.2% from beyond the arc and averaged over 19 points per game. Assuming he’s recovered from the illness that limited his availability late in the season, Porzingis is expected to fit well alongside Jalen Johnson, Onyeka Okongwu, and Zaccharie Risacher, the No. 1 overall pick in last year’s draft.

Atlanta may also be setting up for future financial flexibility. Terance Mann’s contract, worth $15.5 million annually for the next three years, is off the books. Porzingis is on a $30 million expiring deal, and the Hawks could re-sign him long-term. Meanwhile, Trae Young has a player option, and Dyson Daniels, the reigning Most Improved Player, is eligible for an extension this summer.

Brooklyn's Draft Strategy and Cap Space

The Nets take on Mann’s contract in exchange for the No. 22 pick, which originally belonged to the Lakers before being routed through Atlanta via last summer's Dejounte Murray trade with the Pelicans. Brooklyn now owns five first-round picks in Wednesday’s draft: Nos. 8, 19, 22, 26, and 27.

The Nets are still comfortably under the salary cap, and the deal can’t become official until the start of the new league year on July 6, as they're using cap space to facilitate the trade.

With the Celtics seemingly entering a reshaping phase and both the Hawks and Nets positioning for flexibility and future assets, this trade could ripple throughout the league this summer.
