The far-right influencer driving national security firings, Laura Loomer, is who?

Although the White House has occasionally attempted to marginalize her, the white supremacist has been associated with Trump for years.

Right-wing extremist and political influencer Laura Loomer, who is well-known for her fiery social media presence, seemed to have been marginalized at times during Donald Trump's campaign and later throughout his administration.

However, she has had the US president's ear for a long time and might do so once more, at least for the time being.
As the team struggled to respond to questions about why Trump's top security leaders were discussing a military operation in Yemen using Signal, a publicly available encrypted app, and how a journalist was inadvertently added to the group chat, the notorious white nationalist and conspiracy theorist called on Trump to fire national security council officials for not being sufficiently loyal during a meeting in the Oval Office on Wednesday.
According to those familiar with the situation, Trump agreed with her judgment, the Associated Press reported. Later, according to many publications, he fired the National Security Agency's director and his deputy director. Loomer posted about the firing on X on Friday morning, launching a barrage of ad hominem assaults against Democratic appointments.
Even though Loomer has been criticized for her support of 9/11 conspiracy theories and her history of anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim writings, this was the most recent indication of her impact.

Here are some facts about Loomer and her and Trump's comments regarding the most recent event.
The 31-year-old Loomer has been active in politics as a Trump supporter. She was well-known for organizing protests, including climbing a fence at a house owned by then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and handcuffing herself to a Twitter office after the service banned her. She also campaigned unsuccessfully for Congress twice, in 2020 and 2022, in south Florida.
Loomer was photographed leaving the jet the day before the Republican presidential candidate flew in Philadelphia to debate his electoral rival, then-US vice president Kamala Harris, and he also accompanied Trump on his 9/11 anniversary trips to New York and Pennsylvania last year. According to Loomer, she was invited as a guest at those times.

Loomer claimed that because Trump's supporters wanted him to avoid her, she never formally joined the campaign.
Facebook is among the several social media sites where Loomer has been blocked. In reference to Harris's Indian and Jamaican ancestry, she wrote on social media during the previous year's presidential campaign that "the White House will smell like curry & White House speeches will be handled by a call center" if Harris defeated Trump.
She publicly argued with South African-born billionaire Trump aide Elon Musk in December over their divergent views on the use of skilled migrant permits.

Such visas, according to the conservative activist, are in opposition to the "America First" goal. After being momentarily suspended, she has now reactivated her account on X, which was once Twitter and is currently owned by Musk.
Following a report from Loomer that included images of Hunter Biden's protective detail while in South Africa, Trump terminated the Secret Service protection duties given to Democrat Joe Biden's adult children earlier this month.

Loomer hosts a podcast on Rumble, a site that streams far-right personalities, called Loomer Unleashed. In addition to regularly posting anti-Islamic and anti-immigrant content on social media, the influencer attacked Harris in a very racist and misogynistic manner. A video she posted on X once claimed that "9/11 was an Inside Job!"

Trump claimed that Laura had "strong beliefs" and that she had been a fan of his throughout the election last year, but denying that he was aware of her racist remarks regarding Harris. Later, he would express his disagreement with her remarks on his Truth Social account.

Trump referred to Loomer as a "a fine patriot and a very powerful person" on Thursday, denying any involvement in the removal of officials from their positions at the National Security Council.

As he flew to Miami, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that she had only offered suggestions.
Like I do with everyone, I listen to their suggestions sometimes,” Trump remarked, adding that she is typically quite helpful. She gave job recommendations to specific individuals.

The Stakes Have Never Been Higher

The world’s most powerful leader is using his influence to suppress journalistic organizations that refuse to obey his commands or dare to critique his policies. Donald Trump’s attacks on the press range from bans and lawsuits to personally selecting a loyal group of reporters.

But the threat to press freedom extends far beyond Trump.

Across the globe, economic pressures and authoritarian regimes are making it harder for journalists to do their jobs. A truly independent press—one that can’t be silenced or manipulated by those in power—is essential to democracy. Leaders like Trump and Hungary’s Viktor Orbán seek to weaken it through exclusion and control.

At The Guardian, we refuse to back down. As a global news organization, we stand firm against assaults on the free press. We serve no corporate interests, no political agendas—only the truth.

Our ownership structure is unique: we are backed by an independent trust dedicated solely to protecting and upholding our journalism. That means no billionaire owner shaping our coverage, no shareholders pressuring us for profit.

In this rapidly changing world, fearless, well-funded, and rigorous journalism is more important than ever. As Trump floods the narrative, our responsibility is to cut through the noise—focusing on the stories that matter most, holding power to account, and offering a vision for a better future.

As Guardian columnist Rebecca Solnit puts it, “Authentic hope requires clarity … and imagination.”

The Guardian delivers both. And with support from readers like you in Bangladesh, we can continue to report the truth boldly and relentlessly—never pulling our punches.

The stakes are immense. But together, we can make a difference.
