Images that have been leaked point to an impending Oblivion remaster. As early as next week, Microsoft might quietly release the game.
It looks like Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered will soon be announced. Before being deleted, images from the game were discovered in Virtuous' website files. Several side-by-side comparisons between the 2006 release and the remaster were included in the pictures, which are still visible on the hosting website imgur. An Oblivion Gate is included in one of the many images showcasing the remaster's surroundings. The game's recognizable fire-wreathed emblem and box art have also been redone, and one for the remaster's deluxe edition is included.
Rumors of an Oblivion remaster cropped up in 2023, revealed in documents pertaining to the Federal Trade Commission’s case against Microsoft. Those documents were a part of a Microsoft presentation on its then pending acquisition of Zeni-Max studios which the company bought in 2021 for $7.5 billion dollars. Other games from that presentation included a Fallout 3 remaster, another game in the Dishonored franchise, and something known as Doom Year Zero which very much sounds like Doom: The Dark Ages which launches in May.
The leak of these images may affect Microsoft's timeline, but at least the Oblivion remaster is real and coming soon. As for Elder Scrolls VI, which was announced nearly seven years ago and has not seen any major updates since, who knows? Tom Warren of The Verge reports that Microsoft planned to release the remaster sometime in late spring or early summer, and journalist and insider Jeff Grubb similarly reports that Microsoft intended to stealth release the game sometime next week.
