The retail chain will stop accepting gift cards as it prepares to shut down all locations.

Craft retailer Joann has stopped accepting its own gift cards as it continues its liquidation process. The company filed for bankruptcy in January, initially planning to close over 500 of its more than 800 stores. However, after GA Group acquired most of Joann’s assets, it was announced that all remaining stores would also shut down.

As part of the ongoing going-out-of-business sales, Joann implemented a policy to stop accepting gift cards on February 28. This decision came just days after the February 25 announcement confirming the closure of all locations.

Many customers have voiced their frustration on social media, upset that their gift cards are now unusable. One Instagram comment read: "I just want you to know how incredibly upsetting it is that you cut off our ability to use gift cards. Regardless of the fact that you are closing, your business took money and now refuses to give the product in exchange for it. Wrong."

While state laws regarding gift cards vary, their use during liquidation is ultimately determined by the bankruptcy court.
